Why We Built a Desktop E-Reader in Rust Instead of a Packaged Browser

The quest for a lightweight reader that doesn't consume your laptop's resources.

The Epidemic of Bloated Applications

If you open the Windows Task Manager while using modern desktop applications, the landscape is often disheartening: music players, chat clients, and document readers each devouring anywhere from 400 MB to 1 GB of RAM.

The reason behind this phenomenon is engineering convenience: bundling a complete web browser (Electron) alongside application code. For a book-reading tool—whose primary mission is parsing structured text and displaying it with typographic poise—this approach is excessive and inefficient, severely draining laptop battery life.

“A book should not need half a gigabyte of RAM just to render its first page.”

Rust and Tauri: Uncompromised Speed

When we began designing Historia - Reader, our fundamental premise was absolute lightness. We chose to build the core in Rust, a systems programming language that guarantees compile-time memory safety without a garbage collector.

Leveraging the Tauri 2.0 ecosystem and the native WebView2 runtime provided by Windows 10 and Windows 11, Historia reuses the components the operating system already holds in memory. The result is decisive: the installation package is around ~15 MB, startup is nearly instantaneous, and idle memory usage is a tiny fraction compared to traditional readers.

Respect for Hardware and Readers Alike

We believe the best software is that which disappears into the background. When you are immersed in a novel or studying a dense essay, your laptop fan should not spin up, nor should the system lag when turning a page.

Historia - Reader proves that handcrafted systems engineering brings back to Windows the swiftness and silence that readers truly deserve.
